The most significant contributor to the Carbon Footprint in Indonesia comes from the Energy sector & one of them is Transportation 🚘

Data Source: Indonesia’s Climate Transparency Report 2020

Do you guys know why Transportation become one of the largest carbon emission contributors? Yup, because transportation especially in Indonesia, most of them still use fossil fuel that produces Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Transportation contributes 27% of greenhouse gas emissions, making it the 2nd largest contributor to Indonesia in the energy sector after the Industrial sector.

As you can see on the table, Indonesia is one of the top 5 countries with bad air quality worldwide (Data taken from June 28th, 2022). Bad air quality is caused by many aspects, such as unpredictable climatic conditions and higher temperatures. One of the aspects that caused these conditions are affected by the production of carbon dioxide comes from transportation with fossil fuels that are mixed in the air.

Air is part of our life, we breathe every second, just imagine what will happen if the air quality gets worse every day? There will be no more clean air that we can live in and it’ll directly affect our health, so this problem urgently needs to be solved now.

We’re already feeling this problem nowadays, here are some data that proves this:

  • The weather is getting hotter from 1991-2022, in June 2022 the average weather in Indonesia is about 27 C. This temperature is the 22nd highest in the last 30 years (bmkg.go.id)

  • Indonesia is in the top 5 countries in 2022 who has bad air quality in the world (iqair.com)

  • National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) said in early 2022, the total number of natural disasters that occurred in Indonesia are about 954, 379 of them because of floods and 335 of them because of extreme weather.

So, this is the problem that needs urgently to be solved right now and we can start it ourselves, if not those who start to solve it now, who else will do it?

We can start to solve this problem with things that have become part of our lives, like transportation, reducing the use of private vehicles and changing it into public transportation, or using an eco-friendly vehicle like bicycle.

First of all, because we already know what problem needs to be solved, so we decide to validate our hypothesis about carbon footprint from user & expert perspectives by conducting user interviews.

Our target user for the interview is people from the gen z & millennial generation who are already aware of carbon footprint and expert who have sustainability experience and have joined the community.

We decide to go on with food because, every day we consume food, it’s closest to us, and the easiest for us to control.

As like user said, food is one of the carbon footprints that they hard to reduce, so this is the challenge how can we help them find it easier to reduce and make it a habit.

Our target user for the interview now is more specific, the user who uses a private vehicle has used public transportation, and has awareness of their carbon footprint. We also conduct an interview again with the user we interviewed for the general carbon footprint question.

From the interview result, we know that most of the problems experienced by users are they don’t know how to track their carbon emissions from one location to others, to make them more triggered to reduce the emission we can connect the emission with the cost they will issue if they use public transportation vs private vehicle and we can also give a recommendation how they can reduce the emissions and save more cost.

In this step, we ask a lot of questions by using HMW (How Might We) to generate solutions. Here are the 4 questions that we want to answer.

  1. How might we help user to know the public transportation they can use to go from the start location to the destination?

  2. How might we help user track their emitted carbon emission & cost through transportation?

  3. How might we help user know what’s the impact they will give on the environment by reducing carbon emissions?

To track transportation carbon emissions effectively, users can:

  1. Enable Location Services: Ensures accurate tracking and emissions calculation.

  2. Optional Map View: Suggests routes for lower emissions.

  3. Start and End Tracking: Captures trip details by selecting transportation mode at the start and ending the trip upon arrival.

  4. Optional Cost Input: Enter or auto-calculate costs based on distance to help manage expenses.

  5. Detailed Report: Provides an analysis of carbon footprint and cost, with recommendations for reducing both.

We do a deep linking method to Moovit. An application to help riders from point A to B in the easiest and most efficient way.

This feature exists to tackle problems, the user doesn't know if they want to use public transportation, and which route and transportation mode should they choose.

Maybe you will ask, why we do deep linking to Moovit instead of showing the route in our app? Because there are no open source data regarding the routes of all public transportation in Indonesia especially for the Bus and Train, so we decide to use Moovit, because the data about the route is already available in their documentation.

This is another flow if users want to track their transport carbon emissions using public transportation (bus or train), which required multiple transits from the train station or bus stop.

We help the user by providing a switch transportation mode, so they can easily change the transportation used by them to do transit.

The trip summary provides details from the starting location to the destination, assessing the carbon efficiency of the chosen transportation method.

We categorize summaries into two types:

  1. For car/motorcycle users: If these are used for long distances, we recommend switching to public transportation like buses or trains. The summary includes a visual comparison showing potential reductions in carbon emissions and costs, and offers alternative routes available through Moovit.

  2. For bus/train users: Those who travel long distances by bus/train will receive a comparative analysis showing how much more they would emit in carbon and spend in costs if they switched to using a car or motorcycle instead.

Trip Summary if the carbon emission emitted are well

Before πŸ‘‰ The color of the private vehicle is more highlighted than the current transport, so the user thinks, the good carbon emission emitted by transportation is for the dark green.

After πŸ‘‰ We make the current transportation more highlighted by using dark green and for the private car, we change it to grey, so user know the dark green is for the good carbon emission and black is for not.

Before πŸ‘‰ User think they must input the destination they want to go, because the title asking Where do you want to go?

After πŸ‘‰ We change the title to β€œDo you want to add destination?” to make the user realize this is an optional step. We also add a description to make it more clear, this is an optional step, they can skip this process and continue the tracking.

Before πŸ‘‰ User doesn't know how much carbon emission they have saved while tracking use Tracco.

After πŸ‘‰ We add a new card about how much carbon emissions have been saved by the user and that’s equal to how many trees.

Until this case study is finished in September 2022, this project is still ongoing.

We currently still improving the Tracco application to make it more user-friendly for users to use and give a significant impact on the environment by reducing carbon emissions through transportation.

I will keep updating this case study if we have finished the second iteration and made some more significant impact than the first iteration.

Currently, we try to solve the problem, after users have tracked their carbon emissions, what’s the next action plan they can do to reduce or balance their emissions? Apart from switching from private cars to public transportation.

Long story short, we continued developing the application into a business and pivoted the product to become a one-stop solution for managing carbon offsetting activities on a single platform. Since the current focus on a transportation carbon tracker couldn't generate revenue, our team decided to broaden the product's focus to address more general problems while still using the transportation carbon tracker to engage users with our app

Outcome since the app release to App Store (Last Updated October 2023)

The positive effects we've seen since the app was released are due to several factors. These include the features and functionality of the application itself, as well as how we manage our business and the continual improvements we make to our product. Together, these elements contribute to the overall success and impact of our app.
